Tuesday June 11, Day 2  - Test 3

Reported by Dennis Voigt assisted by Rosalind Pentecost and Diana Beatty

Day 2

Another great morning with conditions like yesterday greeted handlers as the convoy moved to the north end of the marsh for a water blind. It was 8:30 before the first test dog ran the water blind that featured a poison bird thrown from a canoe 80 yards from line so that the duck was about 20 yards to the right of the line. A gentle breeze was blowing from right to left so that the dogs would smell the poison bird. Dogs were launched from a mat on a dyke overlooking a stick pond with pencil grass along the shoreline. The distance to the float board with the duck was 240 yards. After the first test dog picked up the poison bird, another test dog ran and showed many hazards along the way including difficult in seeing the handlers (perhaps due to the gallery of handlers watching the tests dog.

Test 3 Water Blind With Poison Bird

At this point the judges decided to move the blind in for a total distance of 190 yards. They also dispensed with the shot and the thrown bird but they did leave the duck floating in the same location where it would be smelled by dogs online to the blind. A third test dog at 8:55 had trouble getting the blind also but later succeeded after control was regained. Dog-number 12 started the third at 9:15 am. Dogs averaged about 10 minutes to make the retrieve although a couple of dogs managed to get the poison bird and two others accidentally dragged in a decoy while retrieving the duck. These events slowed the test. By noon the wind had picked up considerably and varied sometimes blowing more directly into the dog's face. Some dogs had quite a few whistles as they kept scenting the poison bird for a long distance. Other dogs had trouble passing the decoys on the left near the grassy point or at the end where several channels branched off. Later around 5 pm the wind began to drop but the glare on the water increased although most handlers could still see their dog adequately.

The tests ended at 6:40 pm. Contestants waited for callbacks and prepared to head for nearby Orangeville where a British style Pub was to be taken over by contestants and workers for an evening of partying.

Callbacks showed 47 dogs left with only # 8, # 25, # 28, and # 55 gone. At this point the judges have not dropped a dog. The handlers picked up all of the dogs not called back.

Tomorrows planned test is a water triple and dog number 23 will start at 8:00 am.
