Tuesday arrived cool and clear with little breeze. Temperatures were in the low 50's and a jacket was welcome. The third series was in a pond a short distance from the previous day's. The pond contained a peninsula protruding into the water from the left bank. Across the relatively small pond there were patches of cattails in the water. Early on there was little wind and later it rose and switched frequently.
The line was up on a bank with an honor mat to the left. Across the pond, one set of guns threw a mallard to the left where it splashed into the water behind some cattails about 120 yds (?) out. Next, a set of guns on the far left shore threw a duck to the right that landed on top a mound about 115 (?) yards away. Lastly, the third set, a good distance away on the same side of the pond, threw a dead duck across the end of the pond to the left where it fell on the shore about 90 (?) yards from line. The order was: center, left, right. When the dog was sent for the right (last) bird, the middle guns retired behind a large bush on the right.
Test dogs ran close to 7:30 am and both had difficulty on the marks. Shortly after 8 a.m. the first running dog, #21 appeared on line.
Lines to the outside birds were tight to the shore and invited cheating. Some lost their marks by doing so and hunted to various degrees. The middle, retired bird caused the most difficulty. It and the left mark converges with an angling peninsula between. Some dogs squared the strip and went either left of right instead of going straight at the mark. Others faded with the wind or avoided the previous left line to that mark and beached at or behind the middle, retired guns. That produced loose, sometimes out of sight hunts. A few winded the left mark and had to be handled. Some handled on two and several picked up. The test took about 10 MPD and ended about 4:30. Judges decided not to run the planned water blind until Wednesday and quit for the day.
Callbacks were given shortly and only four dogs were lost. They were: 3, 13, 15, qnd 40. 45 dogs remained. The test scheduled for Wednesday was a water blind followed by a set of land marks. Dog 30 would initiate the blind.
