Test 5 Land Triple

Trialers awoke to a cool, sunny morning for test #5, a land triple with a retired gun, run in a large open, uneven grassy field.

Gun #1, at 128 yards and semi-retired, was thrown from behind a mound to the right into the clear field.  When the gunners sat down after throwing, their heads were visible over the top of the mound.

Gun #2, against a treeline, was a high throw, left, across a road, landing in front of a small mound with trees, at 230 yards, then retired.

The go-bird angled back to the left, landed in front of a low mound of bushes, at 198 yards.

There were lots of handles on bird #2 during the early morning, because the gunners were close to the treeline in the shade, and the bird was hard to see.  As the morning went on and the sun came around and shone in this area there were fewer handles.  Those that handled after noon encountered some difficulty, as the sun was now shining behind them, making it hard for the dogs to distinguish the white-jacketed handler.  More than one dog went into the treeline before reaching the gun station, but came out of the bush and got the bird.  The test was completed at 2:00 p.m.  Dogs 5, 18, 28 34 and 49 were dropped.  39 dogs were called back to the sixth test.

Test 6 Land Blind / Poison Bird

At 3:00 pm the sixth test began, a 220 yard land blind with a poison bird, running in the same technical pond area as test #4, the water blind.

The mat was at the bottom of a rugged mound area that extended towards the bird and in front of the line, the earth was craggy and eroded directly in front of the mat, to the end of the mound, followed by rolling knolls criss-crossing the line, then dogs went out of sight as the went into a large depression with water and tules, and then a short run in a grassy field to the bird.  The poison bird, 40 yards on the right, was thrown left towards the running line, the bird landing 12 yards from the line.  Average running time was about one minute per dog.  The test was completed at 5:30 p.m.  Dogs 10, 12, 14, 15 and 23 were dropped, with 34 being called back to the seventh test.
