1997 Master National Hunting Test
Day 2 - Monday, September 15, 1997
Monday dawned clear and cool (40 degrees, with light frost). Lack of wind
early caused longer hunts for some of the dogs. About noon, a cold front
arrived with wind gusts in excess of 35 mph and some rain. The rain had
passed within 45 minutes and the wind abated somewhat, but did continue to
blow in the 15-25 mph range for the rest of the afternoon. The higher
winds definitely affected blind work and caused a lot of no birds on flyer
pheasants.
Both sections completed their tests with plenty of daylight left and the
judges continue to be generous in their callbacks. Section A had 65 dogs
back for the third series while section B had 63 back. Section A will
start Tuesday with a land-water triple that is estimated to take 6 minutes
per dog. Section B will start with a water triple, water blind and honor
that is estimated to take 10 minutes per dog. Since the water temperatures
are already cold (approximately 40 degrees) and air temperatures will be
near freezing in the morning, the water tests should take a heavier toll.
