There was light fog at Pepper's farm at 7:30 for the Opening Ceremonies, but it had nearly burned off completely by 8:10 when the judges started giving the scenarios. The temperature was about 60 degrees, and there was no wind. After test dogs and many questions from the handlers, both sections ran their first dogs at about 8:40. It warmed up to nearly 80 over the course of the day, the sky cleared, and north wind of about 10 mph came up.

Section A (judged by Julie Cairns and Bill Cummins) ran a land-water double. It was a walkup, with a dead winger-thrown pheasant appearing from behind a tree, landing in low grass angled across a narrow channel and shaving a point, 100 yards from the line. Then a flyer pheasant came off a small bluff on the right and landed 50 to 60 yards from the line. The flyer was very straightforward, but many dogs had trouble with the memory bird and had to be handled to it. The entry to the pond on the way to the memory bird was at a severe angle, and the bank was steep and in heavy cover, thus many dogs didn't enter the water but continued down the bank instead. 5 dogs were not called back.

Section B (judged by Tommy Fairchild and Ron Reed) ran a land double with a blind. Also a walkup, all 3 birds were on the far side of a draw with cover varying from very low to dog-high along the bottom and the far bank. The first bird, a dead, winger-thrown pheasant, came out from behind a brush pile on the left side, going to the right. It landed up on the bank about 10 yards back from the rim, in low to moderate cover, 90 yards from the line. Then the gunners walked out from behind a tree straight across the draw and shot a pheasant also going left to right. That fall was 75 to 95 yards from the line - some up on the rim of the draw and some on the far slope. The dogs generally had little trouble with the flyer, but almost none pinned the memory bird. In general, they took good lines to the bird, but squared the hill on the far side, wound up too far right and hunted deep. The blind was between the marks, at about 95 yards. It was not hot while the dogs ran the marks. The line to the blind was right between 2 big trees about 15 feet apart. Most dogs needed a cast or two to get through the trees, but had little trouble after that. 10 dogs were not called back.
