1998 MASTER NATIONAL HUNTING TEST

Day Five: Thursday, September 17, 1998

Sections A and B finished the double water blind started yesterday. It was clear and windless Wednesday afternoon for the first 10 dogs, but overcast with a light south wind and intermittent rain showers on Thursday.

Both blinds were run from the same line, which was about 12 feet back from the edge of the pond, on a low bank above the water. The slope down to the water is moderate, and overgrown with tall grass. Ducks were used on both blinds. A diversion shot was fired in the vicinity of each blind just before the working dog left the holding blind. The first blind was in moderate grassy cover on a small island about 30 yards from the line. There was an acute angle entry though, and the judges were looking for entry to the water on the true line to the blind, not yards down the bank. When the wind blew at all, it was from the line towards the bird.

The second blind was about 65 yards away, about 90 degrees left of the first blind. Two points were en route to the second blind - the first was about 25 yards out, just to the left of the true line, such that the dogs had to swim just a foot or two off the point. The second point was about 15 yards beyond the first. The true line took dogs out of the water and over that point, about 5 feet left of the tip. The bird was another 15 yard swim beyond the second point, just at the water's edge in grassy cover. The judges were very specific that they wanted dogs to stay on the true line, specifically, to stay in the water past the first point, and to get out of the water across the second point. Wind, when there was any, was left to right on this blind.
