Kris,

The treatment for a partially torn ACL is surgery. No amount of rest,
rehabilitation or conservative medical treatment will heal an ACl. The
good thing about partial tears is that if they are treated early then
usually the cartilage damage to the joint is considerably less and the
prognosis for full recovery is better.

Reply to question of rehabilitation after one torn ACL:

I believe we have discussed this on another forum. I would say that
roughly 75% of the dogs that rupture their ACL will also rupture the
one in the other leg. With dog the size of your Shadow, it is a real
possibility. Sorry, but I am not going to lie to you. The key is the
rehabilitation of your dog. It is vital in order for it (the ruptured
ACL to heal) and in order to decrease the chances that the other one will
rupture also. I personally have dealt with this in my Uncle's dog Ruby
who ruptured first one ACL and then the other. She was extensively
rehabilitated and the second one ruptured anyway. It is a fact of life
when dealing with dogs like retrievers who are more akin to professional
atheletes than other dogs.
