Bob G.,
Good question. I believe the answer to be very simple.
Our dogs live longer nowadays than they used to. Cancer
is most
commonly a problem in our geriatric patients. Not always
but I definitely believe a large majority of them are
older dogs. As far as
prevention, not really. Nothing I am aware of as a direct
preventative. I do believe like humans though that those
dogs that are fed
super premium quality diets have less of these types
of problems. Heredity? We do know that certain breeds
are more predisposed
to developing certain types of cancers so it would not
be a stretch to believe that within certain lines of
a particular breed there may
be a predisposition to developing certain types of cancer.
I am not aware of any research that can back up this
suspicion but I do
believe that there may be a hereditary predisposition
to some types of cancers.
