Manitowoc County Kennel
Club held their first annual Great Lakes Retrieving
Championship and Hunting Dog Expo Saturday September
18 at their training grounds west of Valders Wisconsin.
People attending the event were treated to great
seminars by area dog training professionals; fun,
competitive dog events; vendor displays; raffles
and silent auctions; good fun and great weather.
Many breeds were in attendance and participating
including Labrador Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers,
English Springer Spaniels, Brittany Spaniels and
German Shorthaired Pointers among others. There
were five different events for owners and handlers
to test their dogs skills before the 1999 hunting
season gets into full swing: Fastest Land Retrieve,
Fastest Water Retrieve, Duck Pond Challenge, Pigeon
Scurry, and ®tri-tronics Retrieving Challenge.
Points for placement or completion were awarded
in all events. Judges from the kennel club -- offered
help and advice to new and novice dog owners and
handlers. The fastest land retrieve was posted by
Chris Thomas of Manitowoc and his dog Maggie a black
Labrador. Steve Liljegren of Campbellsport and his
yellow Labrador Morgan posted the fastest water
retrieve time of 51:49 seconds. The Duck Pond Challenge
first place went to Steve Mayo of Neenah and his
chocolate Labrador Teak, The Pigeon Scurry included
dozen pigeons were planted throughout the field
for the dogs to hunt and retrieve. Chris Thomas's
Labrador Maggie won by retrieving five pigeons in
59:25 seconds. The ®tri-tronics Retrieving Challenge
consisted of two land retrieves and two water retrieves.
Decoys, gunners and mallards were part of the test.
Participants likened it to a grain field hunt and
pothole hunt in North Dakota. Dogs completing all
four retrieves were awarded qualifying ribbons and
ten points toward their Great Lakes Retrieving Championship
competition scores. Thirty-five dogs qualified in
this event. Point totals were tallied at the end
of the day and a tie for first place was declared.
Steve Mayo and his dog Teak, Steve Liljegren and
Morgan, and Dave Vodnik of Hartland and his yellow
Labrador Chase were deadlocked with fifteen points
each. A tie-breaking retrieve was required to determine
first and second place. Steve Liljegren and Morgan.
Dave Vodnik and Chase finished within a second of
each other and their dogs were awarded the Great
Lakes Retrieving Champion and Reserve Champion titles
respectively. Event Chairman Eric Pashley termed
the day a huge success with over 60 dogs competing
and an estimated 300 people in attendance. Pashley
reported that the committee is looking forward to
bringing back the event in 2000.
