Carl Ruffalo bought "Lucky" at a seventeen-months from Linn Durfey of Bemidji, MN. Lucky had 21 Derby points and made his FC and AFC at three years of age. The pro-trainers Jim Kappes, Dick Sampson, and D.L. Walters played a part in Lucky's success.

Lucky qualified for five National Opens and was a finalist three times. For the National Amateur records show he was qualified six times and was a finalist in 1981. Lucky had 108.5 Open points and 127.5 points for a total of 234 points.A double-header win was part of the total.

Lucky's offspring includes one titled dog, 1988 NFC-AFC PP's Lucky's Super Toby.
