RETRIEVERS OF THE PAST

1977 NAFC-FC

River Oaks Rascal

River Oaks Rascal

D.O.B.: July 24, 1968
(‘72,75 NAFC- ‘71,73,74 CNFC River Oaks Corky x Random Rapscallion)
Owner: Joe Pilar, Chicago Heights, IL

’77 NAFC-FC River Oaks Rascal (Rascal) was acquired by Joe Pilar at the age of four months from John Trzepacz. Both Joe and John worked together to produce this keen and exuberant field trial performer.

Rascal’s consistency is too solid to be ignored. In 1970, he was the National Derby Champion; every year, thereafter, he qualified for the National Amateur; and from 1972 to 1976 he qualified for the National Open.

Nine year’s old, at the time he won the National Amateur, Rascal’s training was not as vigorous as it had been in previous years. His age, experience, tractability, and ‘all-business’ attitude were largely responsible for that phenomenon. At that time, Joe explained that Rascal was so ‘trial-wise’ that he has not shot a bird for him in training in two or three years!!

As Joe said, “I asked Rascal what he felt was the determining factor in winning his (the ’77 National Amateur) Championship. With his head held high, and a glance from the corner of his eye, he quipped, ‘I did it my way’!!”

During his competitive career, Rascal accumulated 198 ½ All-Age points – 78 Open and 120 ½ Amateur.
