Dandy's temperament was always interesting. She was a lovable, brilliant, confident dog of
enormous potential. As a house companion, she was aloof,
quiet and relaxed; while hunting, she was never steady; and at field trials,
a wild thing - a heat throbbing heartburn. Back in the truck, she was a sleeping,
unconcerned dog, who apparently required little emotional support.
When hunting for birds, Dandy was most exceptional. She was a scenting,
tracking, four-legged machine who often broke ice time after time while retrieving ducks, never refusing to go. Together, we hunted Waterfowl, Pheasants, Chuckers, Snipe and Quail.
Jim Gonia, of McKenna Kennels, dedicated himself to Dandy's early training. Together, Jim and I formed a competitive field trial team. My son Darren Hill, at age 11, and friend Carl Chidiac, age 16, also trained, handled, and hunted Dandy.
As Sue Reynolds stated, "For Dandy to have done all she did, plus win four National Championship titles, is a rare achievement. Needless to say, you won't get another one like her again." She was right, I haven't!
